2010 Elks National Foundation ‘Most Valuable Student’ Contest State and National Winners

A letter from a former PA Scholarship winner:

September 7, 2005

Dear Pennsylvania Elks State Association,

Four years ago you showed your confidence in me and awarded me with a $1200 scholarship for college. The support, both financial and otherwise, of my community urged me to take full advantage of my undergraduate education. I wanted to give you an update of what I have been able to accomplish with your assistance. Your gifts really make a difference!

This spring I graduated summa cum laude from Lafayette College with a Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Environmental Science. I was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to help support my PhD studies. I am now attending Carnegie Mellon University and plan to work in the Air Quality research group.

At Lafayette I was involved with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a middle school mentoring program, club field hockey, tour guiding and many other activities. I conducted research on campus, in Woods Hole, MA, and at a Max Planck Institute in Germany. I traveled to Kenya and Tanzania to study sustainable development and traveled to various conferences in the US to present research. I interned with Air Products and Chemicals in the Foods and Cryogenics laboratory. Most of all I had an amazing amount of fun while studying chemical engineering.

Again, I am very grateful for your support and hope that it will continue for future students. If you would like to know more about my time at Lafayette please contact me.

Best Wishes,

Gabriella Engelhart
